Enterprise and Creativity

The last week before half term has been hectic but enjoyable. On Monday, the Careers Department held a very successful Creative Industries Day, during which interested girls from Years 10 to 13 attended seminars led by Old Girls and others who have gone on to work in design, advertising, the theatre and other fields in which creativity is essential for success.

On the final Tuesday before the Half term holiday, we held our Harvest Festival, at which members of the school brought in items to donate to the local Winter Watch charity. At the end of the proceedings, we had fifteen boxes of supplies, which Mrs Entwhistle, Community Action Coordinator, will take to this local organisation during the holidays.

On Wednesday evening, we held our Year Seven Concert. Whilst the girls practised for the last time, Mrs Head and I spoke to parents in the theatre about the first few weeks of term. Then we all gathered in the Great Hall from some splendid music. First, we heard the individual items- with instruments ranging from voice and violin to French horn, cornet and saxophone. Congratulations to Isabel, Hannah, Jacqueline, Nina, Sian, Alisa, Lucy, Seren and Ellen for their performances

The Finale was a medley of songs, entitled æDisney DazzleÆ. Everyone agreed that the girlsÆ tunefulness was only matched by their enthusiasm. It was a wonderful occasion, ending with refreshments provided by the ParentsÆ Association.á

At our weekly Achievement Assembly on the Friday, we heard a reprise of LucyÆs guitar solo and also took the opportunity to congratulate three members of the Lowe Sixth, Erin, Annie and Georgia, who had been nominated by the school as our most promising young writers to take part in the Portico Young WritersÆ initiative. Following workshops with professional writers and a period of mentoring by undergraduates at MMU, students had been asked to produce a piece of poetry or prose on the theme æThe NorthÆ for the Portico Young WritersÆ Prize. We were delighted to announce that Erin had won the competition and Annie and Georgia had been Highly Commended. Erin gave an excellent reading of her winning poem æStockton HeathÆ to the assembled school.

A perfect way to end a week of enterprise and creativity!
